Definition of Pindi or Kavalika Eye Treatment -
Pindi is the modification of Vidalaka. Instead of directly applying the medicated paste to the eyelids, we pack the medicine in a thick cotton cloth and keep it tightly over the eyelids. The synonyms of this procedure are “Avaguntana”, “Kavalika” and “Gundana”.
Indications of Pindi -
Pindi or Kavalika is the one among the first line of treatment of acute or inflammatory or traumatic conditions of eyes especially to relieve pain, watering, redness, itching and discharge from the eyes. Pindi is useful in early stages of all the eye diseases in general and inflammatory conditions like conjunctivitis in particular. It is very effective in reducing inflammatory features produced due to trauma or wounds.
Uses and benefits of Pindi -
Pindi is used in many of the eye disease conditions like acute symptoms of watering, pain, redness, itching, conjunctivitis, keratitis, visual disturbances, dry eye conditions, allergic eye conditions, diseases of eyelids wherein eyelids are painful and eyelashes damaged, structural deformities like squint, difficulty in the movement of eyeball and eyelids, diseases of sclera, diseases of cornea, diseases dominated by swelling, diseases due to injuries. The benefits of Pindi are sound sleep, blissful awakening, clearness of eye, perfect color vision, clarity of sclera and cornea, cure of the eye disease, normal functioning of eye in all respects like eye lid movements, response to light and lightness of the eyes. It is used in the treatment of many eye diseases like recurrent conjunctivitis, visual problems such as refractive errors, retinopathy, retinitis pigmentosa, autoimmune eye diseases like Sjogren’s syndrome, dry eye conditions, degenerative eye diseases like age related macular degeneration etc. Ayurveda mentions different combinations of medicines for Pindi in inflammatory conditions. For example, paste the ginger and neem leaves in hot water with little quantity of rock salt will relieve the all-inflammatory features, if used as Pindi.
