Ayurveda is the perfect science or knowledge of life. The knowledge of Ayurveda was passed orally through a lineage of sages in India. Eventually, this knowledge was collated into texts more than five thousand years ago in its present form by some of the great sages like Maharishi Atreya, Maharshi Kashyap, Acharya Charaka, Acharya Vaghbata etc. The oldest known texts on Ayurveda are the Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, Ashtanga Hrudaya, Kashyapa Samhita etc. which describes describe the basic principles and theories of treating and preventing diseases. There is a saying that a follower of Ayurveda is less likely to fall ill. Ayurveda emphasizes that – Prevention is better than cure.

In this time period of climate change, genetically modified and ultra processed food, chemically treated drinks, busy lifestyle, electronic distractions, unpredictable environment, non-communicable diseases, life style disorders and medicines with harmful side effects, it is a challenge for every parent to help kids to grow healthy and strong physically, mentally and intellectually.

Here comes the need for Swarna Prashana. Administration of processed gold in children is a unique practice mentioned in Ayurveda as “Swarnaprashana” by Acharya Kashyapa thousands of years back. He explained evidently the administration of Swarna (gold) in children for the benefits of improving intellect, digestion and metabolism, physical strength, immunity, complexion, fertility, and life span. There are various formulations of gold along with herbal drugs explained by different Acharya for prolonged usage in children. 

Today it is popularly known as an ayurvedic immunization program or “ayurvedic way of vaccination” promoted by many ayurvedic professionals. It is sometimes known by other names like, Swarna amruta prashana, Swarna prashana, Swarna prashan, Swarn prashan, Swarna bindu prashana or Suvarna prashan.

When to take Swarna Prashan?

Swarna Prashan is recommended to be taken immediately after birth and continued till the age of 16 years.

What are the ingredients used in Swarna Prashana?

Swarna Prashana is made using Swarna bhasma (gold ash) mixed with honey and cow ghee containing herbal extracts like Vacha, Brahmi, Shankupushpi, Yashtimadhu etc. all of which show strong immune boosting properties.

Is Swarna Prashana effective only on Pushya nakshatra?

Pushya is considered as most auspicious among other stars, they call it “The Star of Nourishment” the word ‘Pushya’ itself means “Nourisher” or “thrive”. Administrating drugs on this day seem very effective in terms of action. Since, Swarna Prashana’s main ingredient is gold it is an auspicious day to buy gold / to prepare / administer the preparations of gold. 

Ideally Swarna Prashana should be started from Pushya Nakshatra day and then there-after can be given daily early in the morning. But it can be started on any day and must be continued administering daily for the best results.

How is it consumed? In empty stomach or after food?

It should be consumed on empty stomach in the morning for better adsorption and bioavailability. Food can be given after 30 minutes of giving Swarna Prashana.

Can it be taken if the child is under the allopathic or Homeopathic medication?

Yes, Swarna Prashana can be given even if the child is taking any other medications or treatments but at least 30 minutes gap should be maintained between Swarna Prashana and other medications.

No, absolutely there will not be any complications. But for the complete benefit it is recommended to continue giving Swarna Prashana upto 16 years.

Gold is a heavy metal and has toxic effect on body in larger doses. How safe is Swarna Prashana from this perspective?

In Swarna Prashana preparation, gold is processed and converted into nano particles which has no toxic effects instead proved to have beneficial effects on the body.
